The trade table was a mismatch, and the Chiefs were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Chiefs indulged a want in Stukes while a need in interior defensive lineman and edge rusher stayed open. Every board in the league had Lance lower, and that gap is the story.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick 29 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot.
The board had cheaper options than Gennings Dunker at No. 41, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
D'Angelo Ponds in pick No. 49 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Bryce Lance at the 74th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 33: Treydan Stukes adds a cornerback while interior defensive lineman and edge rusher keeps waiting.
They paid a round early for Jack Endries in slot 109, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Beau Stephens at the 148th pick when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kaleb Elarms-Orr a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Josh Cameron in the 173rd pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Dae'Quan Wright in Round 5, Pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach on Cole Payton in pick No. 189; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Noah Whittington in No. 210 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Josh Moten at pick 253 that the board grades a round light. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
