Washington Commanders

The Commanders drew a line under the quarterback search with Maye: B.

Future A+

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The Jones reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Goncalves.

The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 7
In No. 7 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 26
Graham Barton slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Ennis Rakestraw Jr. · CB · rank 35
They did well to land Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in pick 38, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 33
Nothing to complain about; Troy Franklin went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 51
They let T.J. Tampa come to them and pounced at pick No. 67. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Austin Booker · DE-EDGE · rank 78
Austin Booker in the 78th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Matt Goncalves · OT · rank 114
Matt Goncalves at the 139th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.10 · Pick 146 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
No drama and no debate, Tommy Eichenberg went about where he belonged in pick 146. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Kalen King · CB · rank 139
Kalen King is a better player than Round 5, Pick 16 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 266
Matthew Jones at the 222nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
