The Commanders did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Ryan Fitzgerald fell into Round 7, Pick 22. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Thornton Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Warren at the 61st pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fair-plus on Tate Ratledge, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach on Hollin Pierce in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dont'e Thornton Jr.. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Cam Skattebo in slot 207 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Steal is underselling it; Cody Simon at the 217th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Ryan Fitzgerald in Round 7, Pick 22, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Jaishawn Barham at pick 250 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
