Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the Round 7 slot on Austin Stogner, a name most had 120 spots down the list.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kool-Aid McKinstry in the 34th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They did well to land Kiran Amegadjie in pick No. 68, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Devontez Walker at the 69th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A big swing on Dallin Holker at No. 104, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No drama and no debate, Nelson Ceaser went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 36. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jha'Quan Jackson in the Round 6 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Austin Stogner in the 229th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
