The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Every board in the league had Jackson lower, and that gap is the story. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. On value alone, Wilson makes the weekend a net positive.
Hit on Jayden Daniels and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at slot 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They let Brian Thomas Jr. come to them and pounced at pick No. 40. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 3. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Khyree Jackson at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Will Shipley at the 100th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman open.
A straight-up fair deal on Trevor Keegan at the 139th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Johnny Wilson still on the board at Round 5, Pick 7. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylin Simpson slipping to No. 152 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A slide stopped in pick No. 222, with Jaylan Ford worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
