Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Giants were there to profit. Johnny Dixon, the No. 127 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 185th overall pick.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Williams reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Safety was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nice patience on Jordan Morgan, who had no business lasting to pick No. 39. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Chop Robinson in the 43rd overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in J.J. McCarthy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in slot 70, where Jeremiah Trotter Jr. graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Audric Estime higher than the 108th pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take James Williams this early at pick 111. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking DJ James in No. 140 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Johnny Dixon was still sitting there in pick No. 185, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
