You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Giants did exactly that with Frank Gore Jr. in slot 183. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The Burke pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 13
In the 17th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 44
They liked J.J. McCarthy enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 36. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 42
No edge and no loss on Troy Fautanu in No. 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 55
A conviction pick on Cooper Beebe at the 47th pick that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Denzel Burke · CB · rank 61
Nice patience on Denzel Burke, who had no business lasting to slot 69. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 68
They did well to land Leonard Taylor III in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.17 · Pick 81 · Adisa Isaac · DE-EDGE · rank 97
Adisa Isaac in No. 81 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 130
They talked themselves into Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Max Melton · CB · rank 118
They paid a round early for Max Melton in the 106th pick, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.6 · Pick 142 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 154
They paid up for Cole Bishop at pick 142 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 254
Frank Gore Jr. at the 183rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
