New England Patriots

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Patriots and Styles: B.

Future A+

The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Sonny Styles, the No. 126 name on the board, sitting there at the 221st pick like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

The Walley reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 15
In No. 14 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Luther Burden III · WR · rank 20
Luther Burden III in the 39th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 28
Emeka Egbuka at slot 44 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Azareye'h Thomas · CB · rank 103
A real head-scratcher, Azareye'h Thomas in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Alfred Collins · DT · rank 62
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Alfred Collins at pick No. 76. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.16 · Pick 80 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 120
A wild overpay on Jack Nelson in pick 80, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.5 · Pick 106 · Tory Horton · WR · rank 105
They paid sticker price for Tory Horton in the 106th pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.15 · Pick 116 · Gunnar Helm · TE · rank 72
The board fumbled Gunnar Helm all the way to Round 4, Pick 15, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.3 · Pick 141 · Deontae Lawson · LB · rank 84
A linebacker of that caliber at the 141st pick is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R7.7 · Pick 221 · Sonny Styles · S · rank 126
Steal is underselling it; Sonny Styles at slot 221 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.9 · Pick 223 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 214
Jared Wilson slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.21 · Pick 235 · Justin Walley · CB · rank 288
They left a pile of value on the table to take Justin Walley this early at pick 235. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
