The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Carson Schwesinger, the No. 132 name on the board, in pick No. 235.
They are betting Truss proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Josh Conerly Jr. at the 39th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jalen Royals in the 70th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Ajani Cornelius at No. 80, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Darrell Jackson Jr. still on the board at pick No. 106. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking Malachi Moore in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a tight end like Elijah Arroyo reach pick 221 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Xavier Truss at Round 7, Pick 9 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Carson Schwesinger in the 235th overall pick, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
