When the story of this class is written, it opens with Tyler Batty at pick 221, a reach of 94 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Lawson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a true top target. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kenneth Grant slipping to Round 2, Pick 7 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 70 with a little surplus value in Jalen Royals. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jack Nelson at pick No. 80 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Ozzy Trapilo at the 106th pick, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Deontae Lawson in the 141st overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Tyler Batty at No. 221 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Elijah Arroyo at the 223rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Jordan Hancock at pick No. 235 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
