New England Patriots

The phones sank the Patriots this weekend: C+.

Nobody had Jalen Rivers this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 103 spots to get him at pick No. 220. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

The Emmanwori value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Schwesinger pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still on the board.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Hit on Josh Conerly Jr. and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Josh Conerly Jr. · OT · rank 45
They left a pile of value on the table to take Josh Conerly Jr. this early at slot 24. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 37
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Booker at pick 38 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 17
They robbed the room for Nick Emmanwori here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 40
They will replay Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 69 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 69
Deone Walker is a better player than No. 77 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.24 · Pick 88 · Emery Jones Jr. · OT · rank 178
Emery Jones Jr. at the 88th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Carson Schwesinger · LB · rank 139
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent No. 105 on Carson Schwesinger, a linebacker they were not short of.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Davison Igbinosun · CB · rank 221
A real head-scratcher, Davison Igbinosun in the 143rd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Nick Nash · WR · rank 249
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nick Nash. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Jalen Rivers · OT · rank 323
Jalen Rivers in pick 220 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.25 · Pick 241 · Oscar Delp · TE · rank 262
A big swing on Oscar Delp at the 241st pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
