The Chiefs torched the value chart for Dominique Hampton, taking him 62 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. With quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Taylor-Demerson steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in pick No. 39. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A conviction pick on Ruke Orhorhoro at the Round 2 slot that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at the 64th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Christian Haynes in pick 65 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Austin Booker at Round 3, Pick 5 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Max Melton at the 71st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
James Williams in pick 90 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Theo Johnson this early at slot 95. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 1, with Dadrion Taylor-Demerson worth more than the price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
McKinnley Jackson at No. 104 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Cam Hart in pick No. 105 leaves quarterback for later.
Mohamed Kamara at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach on Johnny Wilson in the 112th overall pick; the board had better options right there. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in the 120th pick with a little surplus value in Matt Goncalves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tommy Eichenberg in pick 132 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.

Kendall Milton in the 171st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Ryan Flournoy at pick No. 172, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Dominique Hampton at the 173rd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
