You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chiefs did exactly that with Dominique Hampton in the 172nd overall pick.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback went begging. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake. The Colson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Guyton at pick No. 41 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They went early on Ruke Orhorhoro in No. 53, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Austin Booker at pick 64 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
They paid up for Max Melton at the 67th pick when waiting would have done the job. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A quiet steal in slot 68: Junior Colson for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brenden Rice. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Theo Johnson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good price on Dominick Puni in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Mahogany at slot 95, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: McKinnley Jackson in pick 103, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach for Johnny Wilson in No. 110; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 20: Josh Newton adds a cornerback while quarterback keeps waiting.
Dillon Johnson at the 132nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A conviction pick on Jalyx Hunt at pick 142 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jared Wiley at Round 5, Pick 23 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Walter Rouse in the 171st pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dominique Hampton in slot 172 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
