The Chiefs clearly saw something nobody else did in Ryan Flournoy, taking him 66 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It nets out a thoroughly average C-.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Hart pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
They banked enough surplus on Colson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy little value on Jordan Morgan in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ruke Orhorhoro at the 50th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in slot 64. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Braden Fiske at pick 65 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Max Melton at pick No. 68 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Junior Colson higher than Round 3, Pick 5, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Brandon Dorlus was the payoff at slot 88. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Christian Mahogany at the 91st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Theo Johnson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cam Hart adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback untouched.
They paid up for Cedric Gray at Round 4, Pick 1 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in pick No. 103, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Johnny Wilson in the 105th pick says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Mohamed Kamara at No. 120 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kitan Oladapo well ahead of where he belonged. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Ryan Flournoy at the 138th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Dillon Johnson in slot 140, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Walter Rouse. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jared Wiley at No. 171 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kendall Milton in pick No. 172 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Logan Lee in the Round 5 slot, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Dominique Hampton in pick 190 is miles ahead of his ranking. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Bub Means at pick 199 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
