Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chiefs shredded theirs for Dillon Johnson. He came off 37 spots early, and the room will hear about it. For now it grades a C-, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Newton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. However the rest shakes out, Dorlus at that price is a win they earned.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
They did well to land Xavier Legette in the 41st pick, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They jumped the gun on Ruke Orhorhoro, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Austin Booker at slot 64 is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A quiet steal in the 65th overall pick: Payton Wilson for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
Patrick Paul in pick 66 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A tidy little value on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in the 89th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 27, with Brandon Dorlus worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
Dominick Puni at No. 91 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Theo Johnson at pick 92, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 112 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent the 115th pick on Josh Newton, a cornerback they were not short of.
By-the-book stuff, McKinnley Jackson at slot 120 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dillon Johnson this early at No. 132. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Wiley at Round 5, Pick 23, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dwight McGlothern at slot 171 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Kendall Milton in the 172nd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Ryan Flournoy at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had Ty'Ron Hopper higher than pick No. 190, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Dominique Hampton at pick 199 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
