The Chiefs torched the value chart for Dominique Hampton, taking him 62 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback went begging. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
They liked Keon Coleman enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 35. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Ruke Orhorhoro in No. 50, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach on Bralen Trice in Round 2, Pick 21; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Haynes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Max Melton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at Round 3, Pick 7 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor itch, scratched.
Dominick Puni in No. 91 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Brenden Rice at the 95th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cedric Gray at the 101st overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Theo Johnson at pick 103 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Josh Newton at cornerback with quarterback open.
A conviction pick on Johnny Wilson at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mohamed Kamara in pick No. 120 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalyx Hunt in pick 126, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Jared Wiley at slot 132, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dwight McGlothern in No. 159 is fair value, right on his grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Ryan Flournoy at the 169th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached a country mile for Kendall Milton at Round 5, Pick 35, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nathaniel Watson in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Dominique Hampton in pick No. 173 is miles ahead of his ranking. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
