The Chiefs looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Kendall Milton at the 120th pick regardless, 82 picks early. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. It is not that Newton is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
Xavier Legette in the 38th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ruke Orhorhoro at No. 50 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid a round early for Bralen Trice in slot 53, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Brandon Dorlus in pick No. 68 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
