The Chiefs went off the board in a big way for Ryan Flournoy, 33 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Jackson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Xavier Legette at par in pick 37, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for Ruke Orhorhoro in slot 50; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They liked Bralen Trice enough to skip the value, taking him in the 53rd overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Patrick Paul in No. 64 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, T.J. Tampa in pick No. 69, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 71st pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Marshawn Kneeland in pick No. 74, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Christian Mahogany at slot 79 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A wild overpay on Theo Johnson in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Dadrion Taylor-Demerson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor itch, scratched.
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach on Christian Jones in the 116th pick; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent No. 120 on Khyree Jackson, a cornerback they were not short of.
Cedric Gray in the 132nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Kendall Milton at slot 171, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ryan Flournoy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jared Wiley at Round 5, Pick 37 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
