Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chiefs shredded theirs for Dominique Hampton. He came off 61 spots early, and the room will hear about it. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Chiefs indulged a want in Abrams-Draine while a need in quarterback stayed open.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Landing Hunt that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Keon Coleman in the 43rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Ruke Orhorhoro a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Bralen Trice at pick 53 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cooper Beebe at the Round 2 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Kiran Amegadjie went about where he belonged in No. 68. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and DJ James at slot 69 is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They liked Dominick Puni enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 79. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Kris Abrams-Draine, a cornerback that was not the priority.
They reached into another round for Theo Johnson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for James Williams at the 103rd pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A big swing on McKinnley Jackson at Round 4, Pick 5, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Tommy Eichenberg at No. 106 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Johnny Wilson in No. 110; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kendall Milton this early at Round 5, Pick 34. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Ryan Flournoy in pick 171 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Jalyx Hunt at the 172nd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Dwight McGlothern at slot 173 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Value said wait; Dominique Hampton in the 174th pick says they were not listening. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
