The Matt Goncalves selection is the head-turner. The Chiefs reached 40 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. On value alone, Hunt makes the weekend a net positive.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Xavier Legette in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ruke Orhorhoro at the 50th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Adisa Isaac at slot 53 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
A quiet steal in Round 2, Pick 32: Cooper Beebe for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
DJ James in pick No. 69 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Matt Goncalves at the 74th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jonah Elliss at No. 79 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. still on the board at the 88th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Theo Johnson in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at slot 105 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Johnny Wilson at Round 4, Pick 9 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A conviction pick on Javon Foster at pick 110 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A slide stopped in pick No. 171, with Dwight McGlothern worth more than the price. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ryan Flournoy well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Kendall Milton at slot 173, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Layden Robinson in Round 5, Pick 38, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Jalyx Hunt in the 175th pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nathaniel Watson in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
