The Joshua Cephus selection is the head-turner. The Chiefs reached 49 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Mahogany. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Morgan at the 32nd pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Xavier Legette at Round 2, Pick 1 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
T.J. Tampa in the 51st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Bralen Trice at pick No. 53 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in No. 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Brenden Rice at par in slot 95, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at Round 4, Pick 1. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They will replay Christian Mahogany at slot 119 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Mekhi Wingo in pick No. 120 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nice patience on James Williams, who had no business lasting to No. 132. The roster fit checks out.
Dwight McGlothern in pick 159 is fair value, right on his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Erick All well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wild overpay on Ryan Flournoy in the 172nd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kendall Milton at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A slide stopped in the 196th pick, with Cornelius Johnson worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Nathaniel Watson at No. 209, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Solomon Byrd in pick 213, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Joshua Cephus in the 217th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
