Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chiefs shredded theirs for Ryan Flournoy. He came off 31 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Newton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. They banked enough surplus on Trotter Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
They liked T.J. Tampa enough to skip the value, taking him in the 43rd pick. A minor itch, scratched.
A reach for Ruke Orhorhoro in pick No. 50; a little patience would have been rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They went early on Bralen Trice in the 53rd overall pick, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brandon Dorlus. The roster fit checks out.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 88th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Theo Johnson in the 91st pick says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Brenden Rice at Round 3, Pick 32 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Johnny Wilson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Matt Goncalves in pick 120 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Josh Newton adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback untouched.
Trevor Keegan slid further than he should have, and No. 159 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kendall Milton. It fills a real need, too.
A wild overpay on Ryan Flournoy in the 172nd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 173 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
