Nobody had Dominique Hampton this high, and it is not close. The Chiefs reached 41 spots to get him at Round 6, Pick 18.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Goncalves where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in slot 34, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T.J. Tampa. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in No. 64. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.

This one needs a full-page explanation: Johnny Wilson in the 104th pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on McKinnley Jackson at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on James Williams at pick 125, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Matt Goncalves in slot 132 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trevor Keegan at No. 141 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
