There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chiefs started one anyway for Baylor Cupp, 94 picks ahead of schedule. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and linebacker still on the board. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at slot 37, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Ruke Orhorhoro, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had cheaper options than Kiran Amegadjie at the Round 2 slot, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in the 69th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kamren Kinchens in pick No. 70 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Kris Abrams-Draine at Round 3, Pick 10 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They liked Brenden Rice enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 81. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Johnny Wilson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A surprising call. With quarterback and linebacker still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 36 on Khyree Jackson, a cornerback they were not short of.
Maason Smith in the 102nd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
They paid up for McKinnley Jackson at the 109th pick when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Justin Eboigbe in No. 118, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaheim Bell at pick No. 132 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Sione Vaki in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kendall Milton this early at pick 159. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A quiet steal in Round 5, Pick 37: Walter Rouse for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Myles Cole in slot 187; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Eyabi Okie-Anoma at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Baylor Cupp at the 252nd pick, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
