The phones were a trap the Chiefs kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The Wilson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will answer for taking cornerback early while tight end and quarterback went begging.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
Keon Coleman in Round 2, Pick 3 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ruke Orhorhoro at pick No. 50 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Kamren Kinchens at par in the 64th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Max Melton at pick 66 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Jonah Elliss at slot 90, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Johnny Wilson in the 97th pick says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for Mohamed Kamara in No. 121, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A surprising call. With tight end and quarterback still to address, they spent slot 132 on Elijah Jones, a cornerback they were not short of.
Sione Vaki at pick No. 159 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They talked themselves into Kendall Milton at pick 173, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Julian Pearl in the 186th pick, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They jumped the gun on Gabe Hall, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach on Eric Watts in the 214th overall pick; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
Nice patience on Edefuan Ulofoshio, who had no business lasting to No. 252. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
