You build a draft on nights like this. Ryan Flournoy had no business being available in pick No. 252, and the Chiefs did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A mixed bag that lands at C-.
They will need Milton to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
If Graham Barton and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
Graham Barton is a better player than pick No. 39 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A quiet steal in the 52nd pick: Xavier Legette for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Max Melton in the Round 2 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Circle this one: Kris Jenkins at the 71st overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Keon Coleman in slot 81 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jonah Elliss in Round 3, Pick 19 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Dominick Puni in pick 90; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A slide stopped in No. 95, with Calen Bullock worth more than the price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Khyree Jackson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in the 102nd pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Theo Johnson at pick No. 107 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Justin Eboigbe at slot 132 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A big swing on Nelson Ceaser at the 142nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Kendall Milton in No. 159, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Steal is underselling it; Tommy Eichenberg at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Xavier Thomas at Round 6, Pick 11 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaden Crumedy this early at the 196th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Josh Proctor in the 235th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Taking Ryan Flournoy in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
