The Chiefs went off the board in a big way for Jared Wiley, 34 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C-.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
They banked enough surplus on Taylor-Demerson to cover a lot of smaller sins. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
So much rides on Xavier Legette that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in slot 37. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A conviction pick on Kingsley Suamataia at Round 2, Pick 18 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Max Melton in pick 53, miles early. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No edge and no loss on Christian Haynes in pick No. 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Brandon Dorlus in No. 71 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the 95th pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Johnny Wilson at slot 110 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in pick No. 132: James Williams for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Walter Rouse in pick 159 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jared Wiley at Round 5, Pick 36 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kendall Milton at the 173rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Jefferson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the 196th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
JD Bertrand at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wild overpay on Josh Proctor in the 217th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
