The Chiefs went off the board in a big way for Jared Wiley, 34 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That McGlothern pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in pick No. 35, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cooper Beebe at the 50th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick 53 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach on Max Melton in the 64th pick; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in Round 3, Pick 25 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No edge and no loss on Gabriel Murphy in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Johnny Wilson at slot 95, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Justin Eboigbe in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Walter Rouse at the 159th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Marist Liufau at pick 162 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Layden Robinson went about where he belonged in the 169th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Kendall Milton at pick No. 171, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at No. 172. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Fabien Lovett in Round 5, Pick 37 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 186 for years; that is how good the value is. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They paid up for Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 202nd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
