The Dominique Hampton selection is the head-turner. The Chiefs reached 61 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Jones pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and linebacker still on the board. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The All steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cooper Beebe in the 53rd pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 62 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Max Melton in slot 64, and the value did not follow. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Bralen Trice slid further than he should have, and pick 71 is lovely value for the edge rusher. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jonah Elliss at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
DeWayne Carter in the 90th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A real head-scratcher, Johnny Wilson in pick No. 95 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Foster at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Elijah Jones in slot 120 leaves quarterback and linebacker for later.
A tidy little value on Ben Sinnott in pick 132, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Layden Robinson at Round 5, Pick 23 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nelson Ceaser in No. 165 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Kendall Milton at the 171st pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jordan Jefferson in slot 172 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Dominique Hampton at pick 173, and the board is aghast. A minor itch, scratched.
Somehow Erick All was still sitting there in the 221st pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Josh Proctor at Round 7, Pick 6 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Solomon Byrd well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
