The Chiefs looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Kendall Milton at the 171st overall pick regardless, 30 picks early.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. With quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
The Morgan pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
Xavier Legette at pick No. 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Jordan Morgan, who had no business lasting to No. 50. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kingsley Suamataia in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Haynes at Round 2, Pick 32 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Max Melton at par in pick 71, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They read the board right and Michael Hall Jr. was the payoff at the 90th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent the 95th overall pick on Cam Hart, a cornerback they were not short of.
Cedric Gray in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Johnny Wilson in pick 104 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Mohamed Kamara in pick No. 120, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Justin Eboigbe a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Sione Vaki. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Kendall Milton at Round 5, Pick 35 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, AJ Barner went about where he belonged in No. 172. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Layden Robinson in slot 173 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jared Wiley at pick No. 186 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Javontae Jean-Baptiste, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for JD Bertrand in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid up for Dominique Hampton at pick 226 when waiting would have done the job. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
