The Kendall Milton selection is the head-turner. The Chiefs reached 30 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback went begging. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
A conviction pick on Keon Coleman at the 35th pick that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kingsley Suamataia at Round 2, Pick 21 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Christian Haynes at pick 56 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Bralen Trice in No. 64, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Patrick Paul at pick No. 71 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kris Abrams-Draine at slot 88 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Brandon Dorlus higher than pick 90, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at slot 91 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 3, Pick 32 on Khyree Jackson with quarterback unsolved.
Brenden Rice at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Johnny Wilson in the 120th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They did well to land Ben Sinnott in pick No. 136, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tommy Eichenberg in the 145th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy little value on Kitan Oladapo in No. 159, a step better than break-even. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A big swing on Kendall Milton at the 171st pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
They took Layden Robinson at par in pick No. 172, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jordan Jefferson in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Jared Wiley at Round 6, Pick 27 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Gabe Hall went about where he belonged in the 219th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at pick 226 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid a round early for Josh Proctor in No. 233, more than the board wanted. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
