Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs worked the phones like thieves and earned a B-.

Some picks age like wine; Josh Proctor at the Round 5 slot will need to, sitting 73 spots clear of his grade. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Bullock at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

It is not that Jackson is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.4 · Pick 36 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
They took Xavier Legette at par in slot 36, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 69
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Patrick Paul. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 65
Christian Haynes at the Round 2 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
They paid sticker price for Max Melton in the 71st overall pick, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Brandon Dorlus · DE-EDGE · rank 79
By-the-book stuff, Brandon Dorlus at Round 3, Pick 10 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 108
A big swing on Mekhi Wingo at pick No. 88, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
Value said wait; Theo Johnson in the Round 3 slot says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 113
They reached into another round for Cedric Gray, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 96
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in pick No. 91. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 89
Good price on Dominick Puni in the 92nd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Khyree Jackson while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 83
Circle this one: Calen Bullock at Round 4, Pick 9 is a fall that decides a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
Johnny Wilson in the 120th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 144
They paid a round early for Trevor Keegan in pick 132, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Nelson Ceaser · DL-EDGE · rank 165
Nelson Ceaser in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Dillon Johnson · RB · rank 167
Dillon Johnson at the 169th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
R5.35 · Pick 171 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 244
Josh Proctor at the 171st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Kendall Milton · RB · rank 201
A wild overpay on Kendall Milton in No. 172, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · Javontae Jean-Baptiste · DE-EDGE · rank 217
They reached a country mile for Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick 189, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.25 · Pick 200 · Jaden Crumedy · DT · rank 224
Jaden Crumedy in Round 6, Pick 25 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.29 · Pick 204 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 181
Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 204 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
