The tape said wait; the Chiefs did not. Jared Wiley went at No. 172, a good 34 picks before the board was ready.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
It is not that Jackson is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
The Morgan pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
A reach on Keon Coleman in No. 35; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nice patience on Jordan Morgan, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach for Christian Haynes in the 53rd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Max Melton at Round 3, Pick 7, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in pick No. 88 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Good price on Michael Hall Jr. in the 89th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabriel Murphy. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Theo Johnson this early at the 91st pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dominick Puni in the Round 3 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Cedric Gray in slot 95, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Khyree Jackson while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
By-the-book stuff, Johnny Wilson at the 120th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Justin Eboigbe at No. 132 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 159, a step better than break-even. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
No edge and no loss on Layden Robinson in the 169th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kendall Milton. The roster fit checks out.
A real head-scratcher, Jared Wiley in Round 5, Pick 36 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ty'Ron Hopper at pick 173 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Ryan Flournoy in the 209th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Logan Lee at par in pick No. 213, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Garret Greenfield at No. 217 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
