You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chiefs took Logan Lee at Round 5, Pick 37, roughly 37 spots before his name belonged. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. On value alone, Tampa makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 36th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Ruke Orhorhoro in slot 50, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
They jumped the gun on Patrick Paul, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on T.J. Tampa in pick No. 64, a genuine coup. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No edge and no loss on Jonah Elliss in pick 83; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Mahogany. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Fair-plus on Brenden Rice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Theo Johnson at Round 3, Pick 37 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
McKinnley Jackson at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kitan Oladapo this early at the 132nd pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on Dillon Johnson at pick No. 139, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Marist Liufau at No. 168 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Dwight McGlothern at pick 170 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They reached a country mile for Trente Jones at slot 171, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jared Wiley well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Logan Lee at No. 173 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Kendall Milton in slot 175 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Javontae Jean-Baptiste at Round 6, Pick 21, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Dominique Hampton in pick 199 says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 210 with a little surplus value in Ryan Flournoy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
