The Chiefs put a flag in the ground for Dominique Hampton, 61 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at pick 37 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ruke Orhorhoro at Round 2, Pick 19 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: DJ James for less than the market said. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Bralen Trice at pick No. 68 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 69 with a little surplus value in Kiran Amegadjie. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Marshawn Kneeland in slot 79; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in Round 3, Pick 27 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They did well to land Dominick Puni in the 95th pick, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Christian Mahogany in No. 98, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Theo Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cedric Gray at pick No. 109 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 120th overall pick on Josh Newton with quarterback unsolved.
Value said wait; Dillon Johnson in pick 132 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on Jalyx Hunt at Round 5, Pick 1 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wild overpay on Walter Rouse in No. 138, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Kendall Milton in the 171st pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Jared Wiley at the 172nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Dominique Hampton at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
