The Chiefs treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick 173 on Jared Wiley a full 33 spots early.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Simpson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
Keon Coleman in pick 40 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Kris Jenkins went about where he belonged in the 50th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy little value on Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 32, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Kiran Amegadjie at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Max Melton at par in pick No. 71, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jonah Elliss in slot 90 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Mekhi Wingo a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Johnny Wilson this early at the 107th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Mohamed Kamara in the 120th pick, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Quarterback needed the pick; a cornerback in Jaylin Simpson did not.
A big swing on Xavier Thomas at pick 139, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Jordan Jefferson at No. 159, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Kendall Milton at pick No. 172 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Jared Wiley in slot 173 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste in the 186th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 6 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on JD Bertrand. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dominique Hampton at pick No. 222 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They reached into another round for Eyabi Okie-Anoma, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
