There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chiefs took Zion Logue a full 34 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Simpson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and linebacker. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. The McCormick value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
A reach for Keon Coleman in pick No. 35; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kingsley Suamataia in No. 50 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They jumped the gun on Ruke Orhorhoro, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Bralen Trice in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Max Melton at the 71st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Christian Mahogany at slot 90 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Johnny Wilson this early at Round 3, Pick 32. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Theo Johnson went about where he belonged in the 120th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and linebacker to take Jaylin Simpson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Mason McCormick at slot 159. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Grayson Murphy at the 172nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Kendall Milton at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste in pick No. 186 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Zion Logue well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
