Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chiefs spent pick No. 171 on Zion Tupuola-Fetui, a name most had 44 spots down the list. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is not that Jackson is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
Xavier Legette in the 35th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Patrick Paul in the 50th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ruke Orhorhoro in pick 64 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kris Abrams-Draine at No. 88 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Good price on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They went early on Christian Mahogany in pick No. 90, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Gabriel Murphy in pick 91; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cedric Gray at the 92nd pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Johnny Wilson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Khyree Jackson adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback untouched.
A conviction pick on Mohamed Kamara at slot 121 that the board grades a round light. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy bit of business in the 132nd overall pick, where Theo Johnson graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Walter Rouse at No. 136 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Layden Robinson at pick No. 168 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kendall Milton in pick No. 170 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zion Tupuola-Fetui. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached a country mile for Jared Wiley at the Round 5 slot, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 179th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on JD Bertrand at slot 202, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
