The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Trey Amos fell into the 227th pick.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Taking Walter Nolen in pick No. 44 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Wyatt Milum in the 78th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Jahdae Barron here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nick Emmanwori in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They barely believed it either: Tre Harris still on the board at Round 4, Pick 14. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
T.J. Sanders at pick 117 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at slot 141 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Alfred Collins at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Dylan Fairchild in slot 149, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: TreVeyon Henderson at No. 150 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Will Howard at the 168th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let an edge rusher like Kyle Kennard reach pick No. 170 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Somehow Nicholas Singleton was still sitting there in pick 188, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 189th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Cam Skattebo at Round 6, Pick 17 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Trey Amos in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Cody Simon all the way to pick 248, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
