The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Cole Bishop, the No. 129 name on the board, sitting there at the 159th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They will need Robinson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Packers indulged a want in Eichenberg while a need in quarterback, wide receiver and other spots stayed open. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.28
· Pick 28
· Quinyon Mitchell
· CB
· rank 31
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Kamren Kinchens
· S
· rank 34
Kamren Kinchens at the Round 2 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 57
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in the 57th overall pick, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Marshawn Kneeland
· DE-EDGE
· rank 103
Marshawn Kneeland in slot 88 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Darius Robinson
· DL-EDGE
· rank 120
They left a pile of value on the table to take Darius Robinson this early at pick No. 91. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.26
· Pick 126
· Sataoa Laumea
· OT
· rank 122
A reasonable price with a little left over, Sataoa Laumea in No. 126. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.29
· Pick 129
· Tommy Eichenberg
· LB
· rank 127
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tommy Eichenberg adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
R5.23
· Pick 159
· Cole Bishop
· S
· rank 129
Cole Bishop at pick 159 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.32
· Pick 168
· Layden Robinson
· OG
· rank 171
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Layden Robinson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.28
· Pick 203
· Rasheen Ali
· RB
· rank 202
No edge and no loss on Rasheen Ali in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Omar Speights
· LB
· rank 215
No drama and no debate, Omar Speights went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 41. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.23
· Pick 243
· Sheridan Jones
· CB
· rank 226
Sheridan Jones at the 243rd pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.31
· Pick 251
· Trey Taylor
· S
· rank 241
Trey Taylor at pick No. 251 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
