The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Steelers watched Jake Slaughter slide 31 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. They are betting Capehart proves the room right and everyone else wrong. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 7 of 9 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value.
No drama and no debate, Germie Bernard went about where he belonged in No. 60. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jake Slaughter at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
You do not let a safety like Michael Taaffe reach slot 99 and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Jack Endries in the 111th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
DeMonte Capehart in the 121st pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bryce Lance in pick No. 126 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
