The Patriots bet big and early on Baylor Cupp, 144 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 41, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Patrick Paul at the 54th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A conviction pick on Junior Colson at the 68th pick that the board grades a round light. A minor need, but a need all the same.
By-the-book stuff, Cam Hart at No. 139 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Julian Pearl in slot 182 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Tanner McLachlan at No. 224, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Baylor Cupp. A need, and now a little less of one.
