When a board-topper like Cam Ward slides to slot 172, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Steal is underselling it; Ashton Jeanty at slot 44 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jahdae Barron in No. 76, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Walter Nolen reach the 150th overall pick and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jihaad Campbell in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A quarterback of that caliber at pick No. 172 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Wyatt Milum at pick 174 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
