Grand theft in the 151st pick: the Cowboys steal Johnson and grade out a B.

The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Kaleb Johnson, the No. 51 name on the board, in No. 151. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

The Ferguson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Barron pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback and quarterback.

That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 17
In No. 22 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 11
Nick Emmanwori in the 44th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Jahdae Barron · S · rank 14
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jahdae Barron in the 55th overall pick leaves cornerback and quarterback for later.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Alfred Collins · DL · rank 93
They liked Alfred Collins enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. The roster fit checks out.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Tyleik Williams · DT · rank 68
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Tyleik Williams reach slot 87 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.12 · Pick 113 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 121
Deone Walker at pick No. 113 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.21 · Pick 122 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 70
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.13 · Pick 151 · Kaleb Johnson · RB · rank 51
Kaleb Johnson at Round 5, Pick 13 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.31 · Pick 169 · Gunnar Helm · TE · rank 181
They paid up for Gunnar Helm at pick No. 169 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.32 · Pick 170 · Barion Brown · WR · rank 176
Barion Brown in No. 170 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.34 · Pick 172 · Donovan Jackson · OG · rank 168
Donovan Jackson at slot 172 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 112
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in the 188th pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Terrance Ferguson · TE · rank 271
Terrance Ferguson at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
