The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Kaleb Johnson, the No. 51 name on the board, in No. 151. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The Ferguson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Barron pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback and quarterback.
That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 22 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Nick Emmanwori in the 44th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jahdae Barron in the 55th overall pick leaves cornerback and quarterback for later.
They liked Alfred Collins enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Tyleik Williams reach slot 87 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Deone Walker at pick No. 113 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kaleb Johnson at Round 5, Pick 13 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid up for Gunnar Helm at pick No. 169 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Barion Brown in No. 170 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Donovan Jackson at slot 172 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in the 188th pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Terrance Ferguson at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
