Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Packers spent the 96th pick on Roger Rosengarten, a name the board had a full 39 spots lower. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. That Sundell pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Jackson Powers-Johnson at par in No. 25, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had cheaper options than Braden Fiske at pick No. 48, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at pick 58 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaden Hicks in Round 3, Pick 25. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Zak Zinter at slot 91 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Roger Rosengarten well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach for Jarrian Jones in slot 126; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Khristian Boyd in the 169th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Garret Greenfield enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 6 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jordan Magee at the 212th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 44 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value said wait; Joshua Cephus in No. 245 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid up for Trey Taylor at pick 255 when waiting would have done the job. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Frank Crum in pick No. 256 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in slot 257, with Jalen Sundell worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
