Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent pick No. 186 on Amari Kight, a name the board had a full 73 spots lower.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Skattebo steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value.
They will replay Tyler Booker at slot 62 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Tyler Warren all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at the 76th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Smael Mondon Jr. was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 11, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cam Skattebo at pick No. 168 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Amari Kight at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A real head-scratcher, Tonka Hemingway in pick 209 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Trevor Etienne in No. 247 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
