This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jihaad Campbell, the No. 40 name on the board, stolen at No. 256.
With quarterback, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Ashton Jeanty in the Round 2 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Will Johnson at pick No. 37 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jahdae Barron adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Circle this one: Walter Nolen at pick 161 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Wyatt Milum in No. 248 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jihaad Campbell at Round 7, Pick 38 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
