Washington Commanders

Nobody dealt better than the Commanders this weekend: B+.

The Commanders looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Tyreak Sapp at the 148th overall pick regardless, 131 picks early. No fireworks, but a solid B+.

The Fitzgerald pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The phones were where this weekend was really won.

A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.13 · Pick 45 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 25
They robbed the room for Emeka Egbuka here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 21
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at Round 2, Pick 29 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 58
TreVeyon Henderson in No. 79 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.14 · Pick 115 · Mason Taylor · TE · rank 99
Mason Taylor is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.9 · Pick 146 · Hayden Conner · OG · rank 148
Hayden Conner in pick 146 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.11 · Pick 148 · Tyreak Sapp · DE-EDGE · rank 279
Value said wait; Tyreak Sapp in the 148th overall pick says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Sonny Styles · S · rank 122
Circle this one: Sonny Styles at pick 186 is a fall that decides a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 211
Seth McLaughlin at the 203rd overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.20 · Pick 236 · Ryan Fitzgerald · PK · rank 108
Taking Ryan Fitzgerald in slot 236 is close to grand larceny; a specialist that good had no business lasting this long. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Jack Kiser · LB · rank 193
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jack Kiser in the 247th pick, plain and simple. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.32 · Pick 248 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 261
They liked Luke Lachey enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
