The phones were a trap the Chargers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. They will need Fiske to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
However the rest shakes out, Sainristil at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 1 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Troy Franklin at the 37th overall pick is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They did well to land Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in slot 42, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid up for Braden Fiske at the 69th pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good price on Junior Colson in pick No. 75, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Mike Sainristil in No. 106 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on Mason McCormick in pick No. 111, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tommy Eichenberg at pick 139 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
