You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The Foster pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
With tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, Dallas Turner went about where he belonged in slot 11. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Taliese Fuaga at the 38th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Kool-Aid McKinstry all the way to pick 43, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
The board had DeWayne Carter higher than pick No. 109, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Marist Liufau here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor itch, scratched.
A want over a need in No. 130: Caelen Carson adds a cornerback while tight end keeps waiting.
Value with a capital V on Luke McCaffrey in the 156th overall pick, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cole Bishop in the 166th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dylan Laube in Round 6, Pick 4 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Javon Foster at pick No. 184 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A cornerback of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They barely believed it either: JD Bertrand still on the board at No. 229. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
